Shane's Personal Qualities
Integrity: To me the most important quality I look for in a person and myself means being truthful in every aspect of life and maintaining a consistent set of ethical behaviors. Nothing is more important to me being honest and ethical. I loved studying philosophy and ethics and think it is incredibly important to business, society, and living a good life.
Leadership: I feel comfortable with the responsibility and enjoy solving problems with leading a group whether it be in a class project, on the job, or on an adventure. It is not to say that I do not also follow when it is time to follow, if someone I see has the integrity and skill to accomplish the task and are up to the challenge I will back them up.
Compassion: Being compassionate is a quality I have always looked up to and aspired to be. It is the act of showing empathy and love for your fellow man. I am not going to list of what I have done, but I will say that one of my life quests is to improve the quality of life for as many people as I possibly can, in fact it is the reason I am interested in marketing. I would like to work for or start a company on the basis of selling a product in order to help others. I will never be rich, I am far from greedy, I know money does not by happiness, and I would like to use every bit I do not need for others.
Creativity: I try to be creative everyday. I enjoy making art, surfing, photographing, writing poetry. It is hard to describe creativity but I have tried to show it in this website with the extra content.
Positivity/Fun: I am most effective and experience the most success when I have a positive attitude, whenever I become stressed, frustrated or anxious I have to stop and just do something funny or positive that I enjoy. I have gone through some tough times in my life and the way I have overcome them was to be positive.
Backpacking Mammoth: One Week in the Wild
To portray all of these qualities in a story I would like to briefly share my week long back packing trip with my best friends Dylan and Grayson in a very condensed version. We decided to take a trip just south of Mammoth Lakes which we planned together but I had to organize certain parts like the route, supplies, and who was carrying what so as to all have equally weighted packs.
Fast forward to out second day of hiking after we had completed our prior 7 mile 3000 foot climb the day before. Exhausted we embarked up a steep climb on what I assured them was the right way though a pass, a thousand feet higher and 2 hours into the hike we realized the mistake we had made. Instead of placing blame on them for not knowing either I took responsibility and told them the truth that I had made a mistake and I would solve it. We pressed on as I led the way up the shifting boulder field, and 2 more hours later we were at the top, luckily it was not a cliff on the other side, but was instead a gorgeous lake that we otherwise would have never seen or found. I said if it weren't for my mistake we would've never gotten their and I told them if the continued to place their faith in me to lead them I would not lead them astray again.
On the second to last day my friend Grayson began to really run low on food, so I showed compassion by giving him some of what I had left over since I wouldn't need it. That same day I was rewarded with the good karma of having my best day of fishing the whole trip. It began to rain some time later but nothing could bring our spirits down. We cooked a grand meal and told stories under the stars. Finally our second to last day we had a long trip down a trail to the valley and then back up to the lake that was just a sandy 1000 foot dune leading down to it. Thinking creatively I suggested why not slide down it, saving us a ton of time. It worked out perfectly and he saved a few hours of hiking.
In retrospect the trip changed my life and friendships for the better. I have never been so close with any other two friends, they are like brothers to me. I had to shorten this story to its most condensed version, If you would like to find out more contact my Facebook.
