Shane's Skills, Achievements, and Hobbies
Surf Instructor
I worked at Billabong Camps Ledbetter summer camp run by Santa Barbara Beach House Surf Shop for 8 years. I did private lessons during the school year for beginners and intermediate surfers. I also volunteered for the Autism Society of America beach day event for 3 years to give autistic children and their families a "normal" day at the beach. Here is a mock flyer I created for a class for this years even(dates and info subject to change) with the color scheme matching the Autism Society of America bracelet.
Marketing
I will be graduating May of 2013 with a degree in Business Marketing from San Diego State University. I have experience using Excel, Powerpoint, SPSS, Qualtrics, Survey monkey, Poll Everywhere, and Adobe Photoshop and know how to apply them to market more effectively. I provided an example of a mock flyer I created for Pura Vida Bracelets. Here is a link to a survey I created last year for a marketing research class about the Aztec Recreation Center usage by students: https://sdsubusiness.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_8f6QCDMzBSk9J9q
Competitive Surfing
I began surfing 15 years ago when I was 7, competing at age 12 in long board and at 14 shortboard. I eventually won 2 junior MSA contests, one longboard on shortboard. I won 2 shortboard, and 2 body board finals in ISF contests. I also won 2 NSSA contest in the juniors and then mens shortboard divisions. I was the president of the Santa Barbara High School's Surf Club my senior year. I am currently a captain of the SDSU Surf Team. I enjoy leading practices and coaching at contests while being a role model of my fellow team mates.
Photography
My mother is a professional landscape photographer who did her work on national parks. I grew up around all sorts of cameras and beautiful landscapes and so I began shooting at an early age. Besides the photos otherwise noted I took every photo on this website including the ones below. The top left one was actually published in Santa Barbara News Press on the first page of the sports section a few years back.
Fly fishing
I began Fly fishing with my father when i was 6 or 7 I had been fishing since i was 3. I learned how in Yosemite National park and have been hooked(forgive the pun) on it ever since. I try to stay sharp at it and go fish at least once a month and at least take a trip to the Sierras for a week a year. Although I do not go as much as I surf, I do hold it in the same high regard.
Backpacking
I have gone on a few backpacking trips and each were life changing experiences. I went with my best friends and each trip we bonded more and more. When you are in the middle of know where for days at a time far from civilization you really have to depend on each other and get to find out the type of person they are at their core. I took a leading positions in planing the trip, route and, supplies we would take each time and each time was a success, we got lost once taking a short cut, but I was able to figure out where we were and how to get where we needed to be. I enjoyed the responsibility and enjoyed leading the trips.
